What Is Single-Ply PVC Roofing?
Single-ply PVC is the system JLH specialises in — and the one we'd recommend for almost any flat roof. Here's what it actually is, how it's installed and why it outperforms the alternatives.
The basics
Single-ply is a flexible waterproofing membrane manufactured in a factory to a consistent thickness and quality, then laid on your roof in large sheets. Where the sheets overlap, they're joined by hot-air welding — heat fuses the overlap into one continuous, homogeneous skin. There's no glue and no lapped joint to lift, which is the single biggest reason it outlasts felt.
How it's installed
Depending on the building, exposure and deck, the membrane is fitted in one of two main ways:
- Mechanically fixed — fastened through the membrane into the deck, ideal for larger and more exposed roofs that need to resist wind uplift.
- Fully adhered — bonded down for a smooth, flush finish, often chosen where the roof is visible, as on a Doncaster extension we completed in Sika Sarnafil.
It's almost always installed over a warm-roof insulation layer, with upstands, outlets and rooflight kerbs all dressed and welded in.
Why it performs
- Stays flexible and UV-stable for 30–40+ years.
- Welded seams are the strongest joint of any flat-roof system.
- Clean, flat, architectural appearance.
- Fitted in almost any weather, unlike GRP.
- Backed by manufacturer system guarantees.
Where it's used
Everywhere — from a small house extension to a 3,000 m² commercial roof, and even as the waterproof base under a 1,000 m² green roof. JLH is manufacturer-trained across eight leading systems including Sika, Protan, Fatra and IKO. Learn more about our single-ply installation service.

Frequently asked questions
Is PVC single-ply the same as TPO or EPDM? +
They’re all single-ply membranes but different materials. PVC is hot-air welded and extremely durable with a proven track record; TPO is similar; EPDM (rubber) is usually bonded and taped. We specialise in welded PVC systems.
Can single-ply be walked on? +
Yes for maintenance access, and walk-on and paved finishes are available for terraces and balconies. Tell us the use and we’ll specify accordingly.
What colours does it come in? +
A range, though mid and anthracite greys are by far the most popular for a clean, architectural look.
